Bud Bash is another major annual event people look forward to. It takes place on Houghton Lake in an area behind The Limberlost Bar. The event is one where hundreds’ of boats tie themselves together and form a huge party on the lake. Live music, plenty of beer and more are the feature of this event that began in the mid-eighties. In 2008 the highest ever turnout for this event topped 5,000 people. It’s a rowdy event but the Bud Bash is a great source of revenue for business owners in town and along the lake and many of the locals support the event for that reason alone.

On a lighter side, Historical Village Days, 3 day event during August in which the Historical Village Comes alive as a town of the 1890’s, provide a more educational experience. The event takes place once a year at the Historic Playhouse where a village was created by restoring 13 historical buildings from the logging days. The buildings have been painstakingly restored to recreate this unique village. The historical village shows us what life was like in the early 1800’s and features a one room log cabin schoolhouse, a general store, a barber shop, a blacksmith shop, Town Hall, pharmacy and doctors’ offices, a carriage shop, a dress shop, a chapel, a cook shop and two period homes. The event lasts an entire weekend and offers several activities and events including live music and a pig roast. Historical Village Days gives an authentic look at what life was like over two hundred years ago. The village is open for regular visits on weekends in June, July and August.

The Houghton Lake area is also known for several arts and craft shows that take place throughout the year where artists and vendors from all over the country come to display and sell their crafts and works of art. The art shows always get a great turnout and presents an exceptional and wide variety of artwork.
